Well normalized data makes programming (relatively) easy, and works very well in multi-platform, enterprise wide environments. Non-normalized data leads to heartbreak. This web site provides tips and on database normalization including examples of the first, second and third normal forms. This is a nice web site for anyone who whishes to have a clearer idea of what database normalization really is.

This is a good site for learning more on normalization. This site shows the rules for normalization. A table is given (at zero normal form) to illustrate what a table looks like before normalization is applied. If you follow the steps shown from 1NF to 3NF, you can see the changes made to the table and how more tables are created. Before going into 4NF, the data relationships are analyzed and checked for data duplication. If there is still data that can be taken out then continue to 4NF. After you are done normalizing you are shown how to develop queries using relationships.
