Interpreting Your Grades
The Following Information may (depending on
requirements and Availability):
Quiz N
(where N is the number of the Quiz).
This is the RAW (not the percentage) score
you received on the Quiz. The main reason I have listed the raw score is so
that you can check to make sure I entered your grade correctly. To determine
your actual score you should divide your score by the HIGHEST SCORE ATTAINED
(found at the bottom of the listing) and multiple by 100. Remember, I curve
each scoring item, so even if the Quiz was worth 50 points, but the highest
score attained was 47 points, and you received a 41, you score is not 41/50 *
100 = 82, but rather 41/47 * 100 = 87.23.
Quiz AVE
(Your average quiz grade)
This will appear after the second quiz, and
will be your true (percentage) quiz score. If there are only two quizzes, it
will be the average of the two quizzes. If it appears after all three quizzes
have been taken, it will be based on the average of the Best two of three
quizzes taken.
Assign N
(where N is the number of the Assignment).
As with the Quizzes This is the RAW (not the
percentage) score you received on the Assignemnt. To determine your actual
score you should divide your score by the HIGHEST SCORE ATTAINED (found at the
bottom of the listing) and multiple by 100.
Assign AVE
(Your average Assignment grade)
This will be your true (percentage)
Assignment score.
Project N (where N is the number of the Project).
As with the Quizzes This is the RAW (not the
percentage) score you received on the Prokject. To determine your actual score
you should divide your score by the HIGHEST SCORE ATTAINED (found at the
bottom of the listing) and multiple by 100.
Project AVE
(Your average Project grade)
This will be your true (percentage) Project
score.
Final
This is the RAW (not the percentage) score
you received on the Final. To determine your actual score you should divide
your score by the HIGHEST SCORE ATTAINED (found at the bottom of the listing)
and multiple by 100.
Average
This is your average (percentage) score to
date. Until the very end, it is a little complicated to determine. At the very
end of the semester it is calculated as:
Average Quiz Score
* .50 + Average Assignment Score *
.10 +
Average Project Score * .20 + Final
Exam Score * .20 = Final Score
Until all components are in, your average
score will be based on your score to date pro-rated by the percent of total
components in. For example, suppose you scored a 41 on the first quiz
(the highest score attained was 47), and a 53 on the second quiz (the highest
score attained was 74). That means that your quiz average (so far) is:
(41/47
+ 53/74)/2 * 100 = (87.23 + 71.62)/2 * 100 = 1.59/2 * 100 = 79.43.
Suppose also that you have completed all of the assignments, and your total
score is 25 (out of 28), or 89.29. Since we have only the quiz
scores and Assignment scores to work with, we have only:
.50 + .10 = .60
percent
of the total scores to work with. Therefore, your average score is:

(79.43 *.50 + 89.29 *.10)/.60 = (39.76 + 8.93)/.60 = 48.69/.60 = 81.15
Z-Score
This is your Normalized score. It shows you
how well you are doing relatively to the rest of your classmates. It is
calculated as:
(Your Score - Class Average)/Class Standard
Deviation
Basically, if your z-score is negative, you
are below average for the class; If it is zero (0), you ARE the class average;
If it is positive, you are above average. BY HOW MUCH?? If your z-score
is -0.45, you are 0.45 Standard Deviations below the
average; If your z-score is +1.32, you are 1.32 Standard Deviations
above the average.
Rank
This is your Rank in the class, ranging from 1
(top of the class) to N (bottom of the class), where N is the
number of students in the class.
