11. Explain what ASCII and EBCDIC are. Why are they different?

ASCII and EBCDIC are both character coding schemes, albeit different. ASCII is used by most computer manufacturers. EBCDIC is used exclusively by IBM, which does so (essentially) because they feel like it, and can get away with it.
