In a nutshell, a business can not do much by simply gathering data. The key is to first figure out what type of data is required to gather in order to answer two basic questions: 1. What is the problem? 2. What is the data which needs to be collected in order to come up with a solution to the problem? Once the data is gathered and analyzed, it's imperative that the data is analyzed completely in order to provide accurate results. The first one is that passwords never change: Even if it is part of the policy of the company to change the password very often the organization. This not occurred as it should. Because of a lack of automation for making the changes. At least the password of top managers and executives should be required to be change on a periodical fashion. Other accounts that are important and should be changed are the administrator logins, embedded application- to application password. More of those applications can be without a change for several years. It is not possible to have the tools to track and change passwords. A good practice is to invested in Ad hoc change process privileged identity management software. With this software the passwords of your most important accounts and data are never changed without proper authorization. 2. Too many individuals have too much access A lot of IT staff have access to highly important accounts and it is very probably that those passwords can be shared outside of IT. And what is worse is that the credentials will never change. The only thing that could help you is the proper technology to track privilege login, you also need to change the logins every time they are used. 3. Your CEO’S Data isn’t Private A lot of individuals have access to the corporation executive data files. So anyone with the credentials and knowledge can copy, and alter data. And sometimes IT staff workers have more access to more info than the CEO. Even they can access those accounts. 4. IT Auditors Can be Misled If the IT administrators know if any security or failed policy that your IT auditors don’t. Most likely they will use it to their advantage. So you can easily forget about them and security leaks are always present. 5. Security often takes a Back Seat. It’s very frequent that IT administrators don’t tell you the vulnerabilities of the system because they are not paid to fix them or improve it. And sometimes it is also because they do not have the training for updating the security systems, and even if the company buys a sophisticated and secure system. Very often the IT staff is not updated in the new software. All in all, it is important to know what is the technology available to protect the sensitive data of any organization. But it is also important to train the IT stuff to properly use it. Moreover, it has to be monitor who is the people that control and is in charge of the passwords and keep track of who have access to sensitive data. Pseudonym: Phenom CommentsWith the economy still recovering, fewer small businesses, those less able to deflect the effects of the recession because of their relatively limited financial backing, are investing in e-commerce. Those companies that had initially experimented with the idea of online sales and interaction with clients are either giving up on the experiment or losing money on their initial investment. A number of factors, such as the aforementioned financial losses suffered by companies and relative inexperience, are causing bystanders that didn't get in on e-commerce early to lose interest and faith in the idea. Many have turned to social networking as an alternative, however, the research shows that those efforts have not yielded much success. Companies should take advantage of the technology out there, especially free or inexpensive alternatives such as social networking, after having a well-thought-out approach to utilizing those resources. The result of not being readily prepared is a costly investment in money and, most importantly, time. Pseudonym: Mr. Norris CommentsHow to Create a Home or Office Intranet! Pseudonym: charlieflowers CommentsWhile researching more about SABRE systems I came across this article published in the New York Times 20 years ago. The article talks about how people who have a personal computer and a modem can access Online booking systems to book their own flights. This technology is taken for granted these days but I am struck by the innocence that the author approaches the subject and even suggests at one point that it is still best to contact the airline directly. Cell phones during this time were still large cumbersom devices that were outside of the reach of the general public and the author never suspected that one day everything he is talking about and more could be done from a persons phone without even talking to a single person. I think the article is interesting to compare the attitudes towards technology then and now and is especially relevant in the modern business environment where people may be afraid to adopt new technologies which in time may become ubiquitous and make current practices obsolete. Pseudonym: fer040 CommentsAlthough both concepts, data and information, can be used in similar context, it is important to know that there is a difference between the two when it comes to computer programming. Data is the lowest level of knowledge and information is known as the second level. In other words, data by itself is not significant and information is significant by itself. Observations are obtained in order to develop data while analysis is conducted to obtain information. Data can be in symbols, characters or pictures, but it is not relevant by itself. Once that data is interpreted and meaning is gained, it is now classified as useful information. I am familiar with hardware because I build computers for fun and for business as well to make money on the side of jobs. Next up is Software which is the firmware that allows hardware to run. without it the hardware wouldnt do anything but run. Windows 8 and all applications is software that piggybacks off hardware to increase performance. Databases are Information Systems that gather information pertaining to specific data that is requested from the company. Also, I believe if not mistaken a key logger is a database due to the fact it takes information input into the PC and then returns it to the user at a specific noted time. And last is Networks...which allows myself to submit this reference for chapter 1, or allows social media to run smoothly as long as bandwidth is on point. This article basically talked about the 3 fundamental roles of IS in a business. The 3 roles of IS in business are operation, control, and decision. Operation is referring to manager knowing the company. Like if your company operates a manufacturing line, the IS can schedule tasks and processes while keeping quality records.
